Arte is the first entirely bi-lingual quality TV channel in Europe, broadcasting in both French and German. Arte is probably one of the organisations that have proved most successful in creating a cross-border debate on the continent’s culture, heritage and future. The channel, however, does not cater only for audiences in France and Germany, but reaches everywhere French and German are spoken and understood in the continent – including countries such as Belgium, Austria and, outside the European Union, Switzerland.
Arte gives an immense contribution to the circulation of the best television productions across borders, and, as a consequence, to the growth of a truly European audience.
A public which shares media experiences and is capable of evaluating and debating issues across linguistics and cultural borders is the first and most important step towards the construction of a concrete European public sphere.
